Casio Men's Wave Ceptor watch #WVQ140BA-5B Review

Casio Men's Wave Ceptor watch #WVQ140BA-5BThis is a great watch for the price.I found it on clearance at the local Wal*Mart SuperCenter for only $20.00.For that price, it is hard to pass up a watch that you never have to set, staying acurate to within a few seconds a day.My grandfather was a railroad conductor and this watch would have been the stuff dreams are made of for him.

As far as styling goes, that's a personal choice. This watch should please most people. The watch is actually much nicer looking than the picture here. The bezel is anodized stainless steel that has a nice satin finish, complemented by a black face and nice tan nylon fabric band.About the only places this Casio might not suffice is with your wedding tux or on Disco Stu's wrist (not enough bling!).

The minuses:

There are few. When I picked up the watch, the hands were out of calibration, indicating a random time and it had not sync'ed up with WWV.The set-up procedure is a bit tedious, but not too difficult. You have go go into a set-up mode, then hold down a button until all three hands point to 12 o'clock. This lets the watch know where the hands are, then it merely counts 86,400 clicks per 24 hours from then on.My watch was off by about an hour ahead, so it took holding the calibration button down for about five minutes to get all hands pointing to 12.Luckily, this should be something you only ever need to do once.To be fair, the manual says the watch is supposed to ship with all hands at 12, so customers fiddling with the watch at the store probably goofed up the calibration.

I wish the watch were a tad thinner and lighter, but there is a lot going on inside. In all fairness, this watch is as thin and light as most others.I am spoiled because I'm used to wearing a Casio analog with a resin case and band that's as light as a feather - a tough act to follow!

The pluses:

The watch should always be able to set itself to the correct time, and it even compensates for Daylight Saving Time automatically. The radio signal the Casio monitors is WWV 60 KHz (yes, that's KHz!), transmitted from the NIST at Boulder, Colorado. The time signal conveys the exact date and time and whether DST is in effect. My watch didn't have any trouble syncing up on the fist try at midnight local time, here in Ohio.It took about two minutes of monitoring, then the hands quickly zipped right to the correct time - very nifty! The only place it doesn't work correctly in North America is Nova Scotia, which has a 1/2 hour offset from Eastern Time.Casio didn't provide a setting for that peculiar time zone.

The watch has a nice under-stated styling the can match casual to business without being too bland or overly showy. The buttons are easy to operate and are not prone to accidental presses. There is an amber night light that works well.In most cases, you won't need the light because the hands have phosphor paint that is easy to see if your eyes are dark-adapted.The case is water resistant and suitable fend off to most incidetal water exposure hazards.

A manual in English, Spanish and French is icluded. The manual does a good job of explaining how to set up, adjust and trouble shoot the watch. If you follow the steps as written, it should be very easy to get the watch set up.

Casio states the expected battery life is about two years between replacements.A new cell is about $4.00, according to the lady at the Wal*Mart Jewelry counter.

If you are a techno geek that's also got an eye for modest fashion this is probably the watch for you. This Casio is a good value at the Amazon price and virtually irresistable if you can find it on discount.
